I get s at the most inconvenient times. How do you handle it when someone (especially girls) notice?

Do I say 'Oh, pardon that, it's involuntary' or just pretend to not notice? Sometimes I feel like it's the proverbial elephant in the room that we pretend to not notice. Women can answer if they've run into this with a guy first hand. Please don't be demeaning or crude to me.
