Tooth ache caused by what?

I've had two root cs done on my front left tooth, the second was to correct the first. But possible TMJ or muscle strain/inflamation near jaw/neck or under ear on left side. My tooth hurt durring all procedures before/durring/after.. and has never really settled down. Specialist say it could be one or the other...had all the scans and doctors.. so it would be somthing that couldn't be detected by x-ray or treated with antibiotics. But how do I tell what's causing what for sure.. and how should I go about making that decision? Wouldn't want to loose the tooth or have surgery on it if it won't help... but I don't want to not do anything if it's causing all my problems..
